　　Theis a phenomenon that cosmetic operations have become increasingly commonplace today. While each individual may have disparate reasons to alter his or her appearance, I tend to attribute this fad to media influences and technology breakthroughs. And the cosmetic frenzy could be both a blessing and a curse.

　　In order to establish a relationship between the vanity beauty faddism and the world we live in today, we must first identify two key elements that influences our daily lives – media and technology. Given the ubiquitous advertising that dominates The Information Age, younger generations have been weaned on advertisements that induce them to pursue perfection in all aspects of their lives – to change the way they look stands out as a key pursuit. But only temptation is not enough, what effectuates the cosmetic trend is the advanced technology, which reduces the cost of surgeries, thus making the once-luxurious service affordable to the populace.

　　When it comes to the pros and cons of the prevailing vanitybeauty surgeries, I would say the effect is twofold depending on how we view this phenomenon. For advocates, of particular significance is the economic return, whether it be job opportunities generated by the business or the contribution to tax and even to tourism – one convincing example is South Korea, whose cosmetic industry acts as a magnet for millions of tourists. Not to be left behind is the increased self-esteem after the look of individuals improved, which benefit job hunters inservice and beauty industries. For the opponents, however, what concerns them is the risk of the surgery, given the avalanche of new practitioners in the nascent business - research evidences show a surge in medical accidents in relation to cosmetic operations in the past decade.

　　It is my conclusion therefore, people’s bias for cosmetic surgeries is the result of media hype and technology advances, and this trend has both positive and negative effects.
